Buick is a brand of automobile built in the United States, Canada, and China by General Motors Corporation. Buicks are sold in North America, China, Taiwan, and Israel. It is now GM's only US-based entry-level luxury brand since the demise of Oldsmobile in 2004, although GM's Swedish subsidiary, Saab, fills a similar segment in price and prestige level.

Buick originated as an independent motor car manufacturer, the Buick Motor Company, incorporated on May 19, 1903 by the Scottish-American David Dunbar Buick (who invented the overhead valve engine on which the company's success was based) in Flint, Michigan. In 1904 the struggling company was taken over by James Whiting, who brought in William C. Durant to manage his new acquisition. Buick sold his stock for a small sum upon departure, and died in modest circumstances forty years later.

Durant was a natural, and Buick soon became the largest car maker in America. Using the profits from this, Durant embarked on a series of corporate acquisitions, calling the new mega-corporation General Motors.

At first, the manufacturers comprising General Motors competed against each other, but Durant ended that. He wanted each General Motors division to target one class of buyer, and in his new scheme Buick was near the top - only the Cadillac brand had more prestige.

In 1929 the Buick Motor Division launched the Marquette sister brand, designed to bridge the price gap between Buick and Oldsmobile, however Marquette was discontinued in 1930.

Today Buick retains that position in the GM lineup. The ideal Buick customer was comfortably off, possibly not quite rich enough to afford a Cadillac or not desiring the ostentation of one, but definitely in the market for a car above the norm. Buick is one of the oldest marques in the world, with Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Peugeot, Cadillac, Daimler and the discontinued Oldsmobile.

Speculation existed, however, as to whether GM will repeat its termination of the Oldsmobile by eliminating the Buick brand to cut costs. This followed the temporary suspension of GM's planned Zeta project to develop new rear wheel drive cars fitting the Buick market niche. GM also has started consolidating of Buick, Pontiac, and GMC trucks into single dealer franchises, which would make it simple to eliminate the Buick brand without leaving dealers devoid of product. However, with the development of the Zeta platform still ongoing (including the development of the 2006 VE Holden Commodore and the new Chevrolet Camaro), it may be likely that Buick will survive still.

Buick began consolidating its lineup in 2005, replacing the Century and Regal with the LaCrosse (known as the Buick Allure in Canada), and the LeSabre and Park Avenue with the Lucerne in 2006. The company will replace both of its SUVs, the Rendezvous and Rainier with the Enclave within 18 months, while the slow-selling Terraza minivan likely to end production shortly after. This will leave the marque with just three models in the United States by 2009. There have been rumors on Edumund's and Motortrend that Buick will be comming out with a roadster sedan in 2010 which could mean that the brand will be around for years after.

Buick Rendezvous, introduced in the spring of 2001 as a 2002 model year vehicle, is a sport utility vehicle produced by the Buick division of General Motors.

Given the fact that the vast majority of SUVs were rarely taken off-pavement by their owners, much less driven under serious off-road conditions, a new type of car-based "crossover SUV" was developed that was hoped would provide all the elements that customers actually wanted from their SUVs such as cargo carrying capacity, elevated seating height and the suggestion of an active outdoor lifestyle with less of the negative attributes typically associated with traditional SUVs such as poor gas mileage, uncomfortable ride, high step-in height, propensity to roll over, etc. The formula of a car-based "soft-road" luxury SUV had proven marketable by the highly successful Lexus RX300 and was thought to be a promising new market category for Buick to exploit within this extremely profitable portion of the ever-expanding SUV category.

Buick LaCrosse is a mid-size car produced by the Buick division of American automaker General Motors since the 2005 model year. The LaCrosse, only available as a four-door sedan, replaces the Century and Regal models of Buick's lineup. Its namesake is the LaCrosse concept car shown beginning in 2000.

The LaCrosse made its debut in late 2004 as a 2005 model with the intention of replacing the popular Century and more sporting Regal midsize cars with a single model. Riding on a revised version of the W-body known as MS2000, the LaCrosse was available with two powerplant choices: a 3.8 L 3800 V6 and a 3.6 L HFV6 V6, while power is routed to the front wheels via a 4T65-E automatic transmission.

The new model, as is generally the case with Buick, stresses quality and reliability over styling or performance. Early press commentary noted somewhat unfavorably that the car looks very similar to Buicks of the past decade, and to the recent Ford Taurus.

The LaCrosse is sold as the Buick Allure in Canada. Though American cars occasionally bear different model and marque names when sold in the Canadian market, the case with the LaCrosse/Allure is unique. The original name was inspired by a Buick concept car of the same name shown in 2000 and also used as a reference to the sport of lacrosse, seen as popular with a younger, more active demographic that Buick sought to market to. However, la crosse means masturbation or swindling in Québecois slang.

Future Developments. As of this writing, a new trim of the LaCrosse bearing the Super moniker is slated to debut at the 2007 New York International Auto Show. The LaCrosse Super will be positioned as a higher-performance model of the sedan with revised front end styling influenced by the 2004 Velite concept car. Power will come from the 5.3l small-block V8 engine featuring Active Fuel Management technology. This powertrain is also found on the Grand Prix GXP, Impala SS, and Monte Carlo SS. It is likely to be introduced as a 2008.5 model.

The second-generation LaCrosse will use GM's Epsilon II for its underpinnings and likely debut as a 2010 model, as GM plans to phase out the current W-body LaCrosse after the 2009 model year.

Buick Lucerne is a full-size car sold by the Buick division of General Motors that replaces the Park Avenue and the LeSabre in 2006. Although the rear-wheel drive GM Zeta platform was considered, the production Lucerne introduced at the Chicago Auto Show on February 9, 2005, and Rides on a the Revised H-body platform of the late Bonneville. Initial sales of the Lucerne have been strong, with the car claiming 24% of the full-size sedan market in the United States. The Lucerne has also been rated well by Consumer Reports studies in quality and reliablility.

Like the similar 2005 Pontiac Bonneville, the Lucerne uses a Cadillac Northstar V8 engine in addition to the standard Buick 3800 V6. The Lucerne also became the first V8-powered Buick car since the demise of the Roadmaster in 1996. The Lucerne is also available with the Corvette's Magnetic Ride Control, an active suspension technology.

The Lucerne's base price is lower than that of the LeSabre, its predecessor, though the V8 option causes the price to reach price levels of the Park Avenue. Thus, the V6 options are considered LeSabre replacements, while the V8 option is meant to replace the Park Avenue.

In keeping with Buick tradition, the Lucerne features "Ventiports" on the front fenders corresponding to the number of cylinders in the engine - three on each side for the V6 or four on each side for the V8 Northstar.

Buick intends the Lucerne to compete with the Toyota Avalon, Mercury Sable and Hyundai Azera in the entry level-luxury segment.

The Buick Lucerne is built at GM's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant alongside the Cadillac DTS. The plant has won Initial Quality Awards from J.D. Power and Associates for the past three years. GM leads all other automakers in Stategic Vision's Total Quality Index.

The Lucerne Super. Buick Lucerne SuperIntroduced at the 2007 New York Auto Show, the Lucerne Super is a more powerful, upscale trim of the original Lucerne. With an enhanced 4.6 Liter Northstar V-8 engine, the Lucerne Super adds 17 hp to the CXS model's V-8. Updated styling to the front end and the addition of a spoiler to the rear aims to create a bolder and sportier look. Production of the Lucerne Super is scheduled to begin in mid-to-late 2008.

Future. A completly redesigned Lucerne built on the newer GM Zeta Platform, GM's new full-size global rear wheel drive acrchitecture, is planned to release in the 2009 or 2010 model years.

Buick Terraza is a minivan from General Motors' Buick brand that was introduced in 2005. It fills the position of GM's luxury minivan that was previously filled by the Oldsmobile Silhouette until the division's demise in 2004. The Terraza is built alongside its Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Saturn sisters; (Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, and Saturn Relay) in Doraville, Georgia.

The Terraza uses a 3.5 L High Value V6 that generates 200 hp (149 kW) and 220 ft·lb (298 N·m) of torque, going from 0-60 mph in 10.2 seconds. The Terraza scored three "good" and two "acceptable" ratings in IIHS crash tests.

The Terraza is most luxurious of the GM minivans, starting at US$27,790, ahead of the Saturn Relay. The Terraza comes in two trim levels, CX and the CXL. The Terraza is not Buick's first minivan. The Buick GL8 was first released in 2000, sold only in China.

Future. The Terraza will be discontinued after the 2008 model year following the closure of the Doraville plant. Because of low sales of minivans, GM has decided to exit the minivan business. The Terraza (alongside the related Rendezvous crossover SUV and the truck-based Rainier SUV) will be replaced by the Buick Enclave for 2008.
